International Collaboration to Fight COVID-19: Using Social Media, Big Data, Machine Learning, and Sentiment Analysis to Track COVID-19 Outbreaks in Italy and Worldwide Cities.

Through a collaboration between the HDMA-COVID-19 at San Diego State University and the Crowdfight COVID-19 international group of researchers our team has used network and data science to study structure, dynamics and resilience of real world systems. More specifically, we devote our work to theoretical and applied research on complex systems that can be modeled by multilayer networks. Our interdisciplinary team of volunteers are talented and motivated, faculty, staff, graduate, Ph.D. students, and postdoctoral scholars can be found from all over the world: San Diego, California, USA; Milan, Italy; Malaga, Spain/Malta, Chicago, Illinois, USA; Newcastle, Australia; London, United Kingdom and more. Our research focuses on statistical physics, applied mathematics and computer science, and relies on theoretical and computational network science to cover a wide spectrum of interest, with applications to social and socio-technical systems, computational epidemiology, smart urban systems, and urban policy.

● Track IT. Covid-19 Screening Tool @SDSU focuses to collect data from a large-scale survey covering respondents from all over the world. The data will be collected via snowball sampling through a survey instrument. Data collection is ongoing and may be complemented with representative samples in the future. Track IT. Covid-19 Screening Tool is a screening tool initiative built by researchers at the Center for Human Dynamics in the Mobile Age (HDMA) at San Diego State University in San Diego, California, USA to provide a clearer picture of how people across the world experience the crisis caused by the Coronavirus. By contributing to this survey you will help provide information to educate public health organizations, decision makers, and the general public to address policies on symptoms, social distancing, policy measures/regulations, and social behaviors related to Covid-19 effects. The tool allows users to self-report to provide a live map of changing symptoms and social behaviors related to Covid-19 at the international level. It takes approximately 5-10 minutes to fill in the form asking questions based on social behaviors, symptoms, travel, well-being, public health measures, and contact you've had with others. Please help us by answering the following questions. Anonymized data will be made available for non-commercial research use. Participants must be 18 years and older to voluntarily complete an online survey. By using this screening tool, you agree to its terms and conditions (IRB Code of Federal regulations 45 CFR 46.104, Protocol Number: HS-2020-0123). We are glad to announce the establishment of the Research HUB for COVID-19. The purpose of the COVID-19 Research Hub is to provide Analytics Dashboard and Maps to help both decision makers and the public to monitor the COVID-190 disease outbreaks in Italy and to get a better understanding about the different aspects of COVID-19 disease spread patterns related to vulnerable population, population profiles, and health services in the cities of Milan, Venice, Turin, Bologna, Rome, Florence, Naples, Bari, Cagliari, Palermo, Italy. So that the decision makers can identify potential problems in specific regions and rearrange health service resources as early as possible. Our group applied both data science tools (visual analytics) and data visualization methods (maps) to enable this dashboard and maps to accomplish these functions and visualization.
Our team wants to emphasize that data visualization is a very powerful tool to help us make right decisions at the right time. These web apps can help cities to get a clear picture about the challenges and problems we are facing now in our local communities. It will also reduce the spread of wrong information and fake news in Italian regions.
